Old Fashioned Fourth of July (All ages) 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

The Loudoun Archaeological Foundation will conduct exhibition at the annual Fourth of July celebration at Claude Moore Park Historic Area. It will be a fun exciting educational event for all ages. This program will introduce ancient technology of Native Americans and how archaeologists discover secrets about ancient people. There will be artifacts that archaeologists have found at Prehistoric and Civil War sites. There will be several hands on activities for children and adults. Please check The Loudoun Archaeological Foundation website and The Loudoun Archaeological Foundation Facebook page for future activities for children this summer. Thank you.

Paper: The Carolina Road

LAF is proud to present a new research paper: The Carolina Road by Tom Hyland (PDF, 256 kb). The paper presents an in-depth look at the history of roads in Colonial America, followed by a comprehensively researched exploration of the Carolina Road (now Route 15) through Virginia over three centuries.

Heritage Day 2009

On Saturday May 26 the Loudoun Archaeological Foundation was present for the Purcellville Preservation Associations Heritage Day 2009 celebration. It was an exciting and educational event for all ages. The adults and children saw artifacts that archaeologists have found at Prehistoric and Civil War sites. There were several hands on activities for children. The children and adults had a lot of fun. Purcellville Heritage Day

The Loudoun Archaeological Foundation will be at the Purcellville Preservation Associations Heritage Day ‘09 fair today, from 11:00 to 4:00 today. Most activities will take place in and around the Purcellville skate rink (250 s. nursery avenue, Purcellville) and on the grounds of historic fireman’s field. Bring the kids!

Paper: The Sycolin Road Pottery

FORGOTTEN: A Preliminary Report on the Sycolin Road Pottery: Loudoun County’s Historical Mystery of a Pottery, Pots, and Potters by Amy Bertsch, Amanda Ackman, Tom Hyland, et al (PDF, 291 KB). This paper describes how members of the LAF, in cooperation with Northern Virginia Community College, uncovered the probable identity of potters working in the nineteenth century along Sycolin Road.

Archaeology Field Day

LAF will conduct a field school program for young students at Claude Moore Park the last week in July, 2009. This program will introduce students to ancient technology of native americans and how  archaeologist discover secrets about ancient people.
