Purcellville Heritage Day

11:00am to 4:00pm (RAIN OR SHINE)
The Loudoun Archaeological Foundation will be at the Purcellville Preservation Associations Heritage Day ‘09 fair today, from 11:00 to 4:00 today. Most activities will take place in and around the Purcellville skate rink (250 s. nursery avenue, Purcellville) and on the grounds of historic fireman’s field. Bring the kids!

Well, here’s your chance! Celebrate Leesburg/Loudoun County’s 250th founding anniversary by taking “Field Techniques in Archaeology” with Dr. David T. Clark, Northern Virginia Community College, Loudoun Campus (Sterling). Explore how professional archaeologists discover Loudoun’s rich archaeological heritage. Participate in walking surveys and test excavations at numerous sites across the county. Learn some of the exciting stories archaeology tells about your local past.

Archaeology Field Day

LAF will conduct a field school program for young students at Claude Moore Park the last week in July, 2009. This program will introduce students to ancient technology of native americans and how  archaeologist discover secrets about ancient people.

The Loudoun Archaeological Foundation is currently in the process of developing an extensive public archaeological investigation and education program of events for 2009:

Among these events will be the following annual program of activities:

Date TBD: Presentation of a “A Civil War Soldier’s Life” (as seen through artifacts and reenactor exhibitions) at Claude Moore Park in Sterling

June 2009: An archaeological summer camp for children

July 2009: Exhibition at the annual Fourth of July celebration at Claude Moore Park

August 2009: Exhibition at the Lucketts’ Fair

September 2009: Exhibition at the Waterford Fair

We will be posting more information about these events as the dates approach.

Continue to follow and participate in the Loudoun Archaeological Foundation’s schedule of public program activities for 2009 by frequently logging on to this website and/or consulting you local newspapers for up to date information.

Once again, Dr. Clark will be offering HIS188: Field Survey Techniques in Archaeology this summer, through Northern Virginia Community College’s Historic Preservation Department. The course meets twice weekly in the evenings from May 18 through June 29. The course includes a basic introduction to archaeological field work, and most class sessions will meet in the field at local Loudoun County sites, including Claude Moore Park, Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, downtown Leesburg, and others.
