LAF is proud to present a new research paper: The Carolina Road by Tom Hyland (PDF, 256 kb). The paper presents an in-depth look at the history of roads in Colonial America, followed by a comprehensively researched exploration of the Carolina Road (now Route 15) through Virginia over three centuries.

On Saturday May 26 the Loudoun Archaeological Foundation was present for the Purcellville Preservation Associations Heritage Day 2009 celebration. It was an exciting and educational event for all ages. The adults and children saw artifacts that archaeologists have found at Prehistoric and Civil War sites. There were several hands on activities for children. The children and adults had a lot of fun. Most activities will take place in and around the Purcellville skate rink (250 s. nursery avenue, Purcellville) and on the grounds of historic fireman’s field. Bring the kids!

FORGOTTEN: A Preliminary Report on the Sycolin Road Pottery: Loudoun County’s Historical Mystery of a Pottery, Pots, and Potters by Amy Bertsch, Amanda Ackman, Tom Hyland, et al (PDF, 291 KB). This paper describes how members of the LAF, in cooperation with Northern Virginia Community College, uncovered the probable identity of potters working in the nineteenth century along Sycolin Road.
